Healthy Hair

Your hair reflects what you eat; hence, if you want shiny, healthy hair, you must eat healthy food. Incorporate lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Since, your hair is made of protein, you should eat foods rich in proteins. Also, include vitamins such as A, B6, B12, E, niacin, etc., as a healthy diet does more good to your hair than any hair care product.

Hair Loss and Its Causes

A number of things can cause excessive hair loss.

  •  3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair.

  • Increase in stress levels.

  • Hormonal problems may cause hair loss. If your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, your hair may fall out.

  • During pregnancy, high levels of certain hormones cause the body to keep hair that would normally fall out. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, that hair falls out and the normal cycle of growth and loss starts again.

  • Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners, high blood pressure or heart problems, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills and antidepressants.

 Quick Tips…

  • For relaxed or color treated hair, frequent use of deep-oil and moisture conditioners are vital to maintaining healthy hair

  • Use a silk scarf or a satin pillowcase before you go to bed. This will help maintain your style and protect your hair from friction and breakage that can result from sleeping on a cotton pillowcase

  • When using blow dryers and curling irons, protect your hair with a moisturizing cream or leave-in conditioner before applying heat

  • With your relaxer re-touch every 4 to 8 weeks, you should also have your ends trimmed

  • Avoid overuse of products with mineral oil or petroleum.  They tend to block the pores and are not readily absorbed.

  • Do not relax your hair until it is bone straight.  This is just asking for trouble.  Why relax your hair until it has absolutely no body or curl and then put heat on it to try to get that curl back?
